The Music and Literacy Connection

This course is designed to help music educators understand the compelling parallels between reading and language literacy and music learning. We will explore current brain research, auditory/aural and visual processes necessary for text and music decoding, building comprehension through interdisciplinary units, and student-centered, high order thinking instructional strategies. Participants will learn how the National Core Music Standards and the Common Core English Language Arts Standards complement each other as well as implications for SEL and Social Justice. Most importantly, we will investigate how to strongly advocate for teaching music with integrity while supporting building and district reading and literacy goals.
